Daniel's Middle East News

"Driving Reform." The Economist, vol. 424, no. 9060, 30 Sept. 2018, p. 14.

On September 26, 2017, Saudi Arabia announced that they would now lift the ban on women not being allowed to drive cars. For decades, many have claimed reasons for not letting women to drive. These reasons include it is not good for their ovaries, it would distract men, and women were too stupid to drive, all of these being false claims. Lifting this ban is a step to giving women more freedoms in Saudi Arabia and would soon improve their economy. Women have deserved this for a long time in Saudi Arabia and now do not have to hire drivers and can go out shopping on their own. This relates to us learning how many women in Saudi Arabia or the Arab culture do not have a lot of rights, not due to religion, but to cultural standpoints, lifting this ban gets rid of one of those cultural decisions.
